A dystopian trilogy, the Divergent series begins when Tris and ´´Four” (Tobias) turn 16. They do not fit into only one of five possible faction choices, so they are labeled Divergent. This labeling is the initial conflict in the trilogy. The many additional conflicts plus themes of sacrifice, freedom, individuality, and guilt are woven throughout the three novels, and they can all be traced with the help of this sidekick. In Divergent, Tris chooses to join the Dauntless faction and manages to not only survive, but also excel during harsh Dauntless training. She is caught up in a faction battle, and the second novel in the series, Insurgent, follows her involvement in the struggle, as she and her friends become targets due to their Dauntless natures. Allegiant provides answers about what exists outside the walled city, while introducing a final battle. Tris and her friends discover the truth about the factions´ purposes and intents, achieving freedom in the process. As you read the Divergent series, the chapter analyses in this companion piece are especially useful for recalling the action in previous novels. The Divergent series has many interesting characters that leave and reappear, thanks to love interests and biological relationships. The trilogy is written from a first-person perspective, so what we know of these characters is limited at times. Assistance in tracing their background and importance as they make multiple appearances throughout the three novels is provided in this comprehensive accompaniment. 1. Language: English. Tobias Jackson grew up in Coburn, a town where the gay population equaled exactly one: him. Add that to the fact that his dream guy was his best friend´s jerky older brother, Levi Baxter, and it made hooking up virtually impossible. Now home from college for winter break, Toby is a different person. He left Coburn for San Francisco, where he wasn´t the lone gay guy and the only black kid in town. And yeah, he took advantage of what the city had to offer. Apparently Toby isn´t the only one who´s changed. Levi´s not acting like the self-centered guy with all the answers that Toby remembers from growing up. Oh, and Levi´s realized that he´s bisexual, which makes things a lot more interesting. Heading back to college, Toby doesn´t expect to meet up with Levi again, despite him being in med school not far away. A surprise visit from Levi blows that assumption out of the water. As they spend more time together, Toby sees Levi as more than just the fantasy; he´s complicated, unsure, and real. But if Toby can´t get out of the past and find the words he keeps locked inside himself, he´ll lose his chance at Levi for good. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Crisden. Olivia Kiskey needs a change. She´s been working at the same Nodaway Falls, New York, waffle house since she was a teenager; not a lot of upward mobility there. She´s been in love with Tobias, the cook, for the last four years; he´s never made a move. Every Saturday night, she gathers with her three best friends - Peach, Millie, and Stacy - and drinks the same margaritas while listening to the same old stories. Intent on shaking things up, she puts her house on the market, buys a one-way ticket to Europe, and announces her plans to her friends... but then she meets Davina Granville, a strange and mystical Southern woman who shows Olivia that there is more to her life than she ever dreamed. As Liv´s latent magical powers come to the surface, she discovers that having an interesting life is maybe not all it´s cracked up to be. The dark side of someone else´s magic is taking over good people in town, and changing them into vessels of malevolence. Unwilling to cede her home to darkness, she battles the demons of her familial past and her magical present, with those she loves at her side - and in the cross fire. Can the most important things in life - friendship, love, magic, and waffles - get her through the worst that the universe can throw at her? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Amanda Ronconi.
